Color Your Way to Equity: 6 Paint Shades That Boost Home Value Instantly

"In terms of ROI, I think fresh paint is definitely one of the most affordable and effective ways to add value to a home," says interior designer Bree Steele. A fresh coat can completely refresh a space—and even make it feel larger.

With an average return of 107%, interior painting could potentially add anywhere from $2,140 to $16,050 to your resale value. According to designer Justin M. Riordan,

“A fresh coat of paint is like giving your home a crisp new outfit without the designer price tag... It's like speed-dating for home improvement: quick, cheap, and gets the job done.”

DIYers, rejoice—but choose wisely. Interior paint jobs cost roughly $2,000 on average, so it’s important to weigh whether to do it yourself or bring in a pro.

“If you’re the type to end up with more paint on your face than the walls, hiring a pro could save you from a home improvement horror story,” says Riordan.

Kitchen Goals: Go Gray

"For the kitchen, I’m a big fan of subtle, earthy tones like pale gray," shares Steele. This versatile shade creates a bright, airy feel that suits both contemporary and rustic styles.

Once the darling of kitchen design, dark green is now fading out. Designers suggest turning to lighter, more natural tones to encourage warmth and openness.

Bonus tip: Don't stop at the walls—paint your cabinets or backsplash to add even more impact without a full renovation.

Bathroom Blues = Big Gains

A little creativity goes a long way in the powder room. “Blues can be perfect—and since the space is smaller, it’s a safe spot for experimenting with color,” says Steele.

Riordan adds, “It’s a great place to get a little adventurous.” Painting the vanity or mirror frame can introduce just the right pop of personality without overwhelming the space.

Lavender Dreams for the Bedroom

Lavender isn’t just for aromatherapy. "A modern take on traditional blues, this soft shade creates a tranquil, restful atmosphere that promotes better rest," says interior decorator Emily Gregoire.

Steer clear of bright jewel tones—they can be too overstimulating for a bedroom retreat. Instead, focus on calming shades to encourage relaxation. You can also paint headboards, nightstands, or dressers for a full-room transformation.

Living Room Luxury: Sage Green

As biophilic design rises in popularity, sage green is having its moment. "Sage green provides a subtle connection to nature and a calming energy," says Gregoire. It’s a color that plays well with both warm and cool tones—a designer’s dream.

While whites and grays have long dominated living rooms, Gregoire warns they can feel sterile. “Sage green creates a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere.” For extra style points, try painting coffee tables, picture frames, or shelving units too.

Make a Statement in the Dining Room with Charcoal

Want to turn your dining room into a conversation starter? Try charcoal. Steele calls it “a striking choice for formal dining spaces.” The deep, cozy tone feels elegant and intimate—ideal for entertaining.

Forget red—59% of interior designers say it’s a turnoff to buyers. Instead, go bold with charcoal or navy, and consider painting dining chairs or the table for a cohesive, moody vibe.

Keep It Clean in the Family Room with White

"A fresh coat of white paint makes a space look cleaner, brighter, and more expensive—like an Instagram filter for your walls," says Riordan. And in a room meant for lounging and entertaining, white gives buyers a clean slate to imagine their lives.

He adds: “Selling a home is not about expressing your personal style—it’s about making buyers feel like it could be their home.” Don’t forget the ceiling—white ceilings make rooms feel taller and more open, which buyers love.

Bottomline

Looking to refresh your space or sell for top dollar? These strategic paint picks are more than just pretty—they’re profit-packed. Whether you're getting ready to list or simply want to breathe new life into your home, don't underestimate the power of color.
