Upcoming Events
Orange County events this weekend run the full range, from a coastal carnival to stand-up comedy to a free beachside concert. Between Thursday, October 8 and Sunday, October 11, you can ride a Ferris wheel in San Clemente, catch a comedian in a 1939 movie house, celebrate cultures from around the world in Irvine, and finish with 90s rock by the bay. Here is a closer look at each one so you can build a weekend around what sounds fun.
The Carnival Colossal takes over Vista Hermosa Sports Park at 987 Avenida Vista Hermosa in San Clemente from Thursday through Sunday. It opens at 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, closing at 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. respectively, then shifts to 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. If a little one does better with softer lighting and lower volume, a sensory-friendly hour runs Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m., before the carnival opens for the night.
Admission is free, and rides run on tickets. The early bird ride passes cost $30 for ten, with one pass per ride for adults and kids alike. Passes are bought online with a credit or debit card and picked up in person at the San Clemente Community Center or Aquatic Center. Last year's tickets are still accepted, and full-priced tickets are sold at the carnival.
Expect the Gravitron, the Super Slide, bumper cars, classic midway games, and food trucks all four days. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, a beer garden pours Oktoberfest beers from Los Molinos Beer while live bands play. Music runs until 9 p.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Sunday. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Friends of San Clemente, so your ticket money goes back into the city's beaches, parks, playgrounds, and youth recreation. The group's website, Friends of San Clemente, has the full schedule.
On Friday, October 9, comedian Margaret Cho brings The Choligarchy Tour to The Lido Theater in Newport Beach. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. Cho has been a major voice in stand-up for more than three decades. She started performing at 14, starred in the groundbreaking sitcom All-American Girl, and has put out several Grammy-nominated comedy albums. Her comedy takes on identity, culture, politics, and personal reinvention with a sharp edge.
The venue is part of the appeal. The Lido opened in 1939 and is one of Orange County's earliest movie houses, a standout example of Art Deco design. It sits in Via Lido Plaza near Lido Marina Village, so dinner and a walk along the water are easy to fit around the show. Tickets are sold through the theater's authorized seller, and the venue recommends buying directly from its own link rather than from resale sites. Tickets are worth grabbing soon for a one-night stop. For more ideas around town, Visit Newport Beach keeps a running events calendar.
The Irvine Global Village Festival reaches a milestone this year with its 25th anniversary on Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Great Park. It is the City of Irvine's signature event, and it has grown to include more than 100 music, dance, and demonstration performances on multiple stages.
Plan to graze. The food lineup ranges from global cuisine to festival staples. The global marketplace features handmade goods and art, including a Junior Makers section with young entrepreneurs. Art exhibitions and cultural displays explore traditional dress, culinary and religious traditions, and history. Families can head to the Kids Village for crafts and interactive activities, then ride the Great Park Balloon and Carousel. In past years admission was free, with paid priority parking closer to the entrance, so check the city's festival page for this year's parking details.
Saturday morning also brings the Dana Point Trolley Art & History Tour at 10 a.m., timed to celebrate Arts and Humanities Month. Past tours have put an Arts and Culture Ambassador and a docent from the Dana Point Historical Society on each trolley. They ran about 90 minutes with roughly ten stops, including the mosaic stairs at Lantern Bay Park, the Hide Drogher sculpture, and Watermen's Plaza. It is a nice way to slow down and notice public art you may have driven past a hundred times.
Space has been limited in the past, with tickets sold through the city's recreation registration system. Confirm availability with the city's recreation department before you plan around it. For other harbor town ideas, Visit Dana Point is a good starting point.
Early risers will love the SoCal Vintage Bike Swap Meet on Sunday, October 11, from 7 to 11 a.m. This year it moves to a new spot at 305 South Main Street in Orange, in the lot at Clark's Antique Gas Station at the corner of Main and Palmyra. Sellers can set up from their truck beds, and browsing is free for buyers, so you can hunt for classic frames and old parts without spending a dime on admission.
When trading wraps up, riders gather at the plaza fountain in Old Towne Orange at 11 a.m. for a vintage bike ride, followed by lunch. You do not have to own a classic cruiser to enjoy the scene. It is a fun slice of Orange County hobby culture, just minutes from Disneyland.
If your idea of a good Sunday starts on the water, volunteers with Surfrider North Orange County lead kayak and paddleboard cleanups of Huntington Harbor. The Huntington Harbour Cleanup typically runs from about 8:15 to 11 a.m., launching from Huntington Harbor Boat Rentals on Pacific Coast Highway. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are provided. Advance registration is required and spots can be limited, so confirm the time and openings on the chapter's schedule before you go.
Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water shoes, since the muddy banks have a way of swallowing sandals. You will also pick up a bit of watershed know-how while you help keep the harbor clean.
Over on Main Street, Chili at the Beach fills the first three blocks of Downtown Huntington Beach on Sunday, October 11. The event features chili contestants, live music, vendors, and kids' activities. Coming to watch is free, and the chili tasting wristbands cost $16.15 including the fee if you want to sample. A portion of ticket proceeds benefits the Huntington Beach International Surf Museum. Since you are a few blocks from the sand, a stroll toward the pier afterward is the natural next move, and Surf City USA has plenty of ideas for the rest of your day.
Wrap up the weekend with Diego's Garage, a high energy 90s alternative and rock band, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Marina Park Community Center, 1600 West Balboa Boulevard in Newport Beach. Think Nirvana, Green Day, Pearl Jam, Blink-182, and Sublime, with a bay view as the backdrop. The concert is presented by the City Arts Commission, and the City of Newport Beach lists admission and parking as free, first come, first served. Bring low chairs or a blanket, and plan to buy a bite from the food trucks on site. Alcohol is not allowed.
Saturday is the busiest day, with the Irvine festival running all day, the Dana Point trolley at 10 a.m., and the carnival opening at 2 p.m. Sunday splits nicely into a morning on the water or among vintage bikes, a midday chili tasting in Huntington Beach, and a late afternoon concert in Newport. Families will have the most fun at the carnival and the Irvine Kids Village, while comedy fans, bike lovers, volunteers, foodies, and music fans each have a clear pick. Hours, parking, and ticket details can change, so double check each organizer's page before you head out.
