The 2025 Home Improvement Playbook: Upgrades That Add Value & Comfort

Now more than ever, homeowners are looking to maximize their investment when upgrading their homes. Some are staying put and maximizing their home's potential, while others are looking to capitalize on the strong seller's market. Either way, if your house needs a bit of sprucing up, now is the time to consider your options.

The ‘No-Brainer’ Remodels That Always Pay Off

“Fixing up your kitchen? No-brainer. Fixing up your bathroom? Another no-brainer,” says Eric Udler, producer of the New Jersey Home & Garden Show. And he’s right—these are the tried-and-true home improvement projects that add instant value.

According to Angi’s latest report, 93% of homeowners are planning some sort of renovation in 2025, with 46% tackling large-scale projects over the next five years. The top choices?

  • Kitchen remodels (31%)
  • Bathroom upgrades (28%)

Not only do these updates modernize a space, but they also offer some of the highest returns on investment.

Bringing the Inside Comforts Outside

Another hot trend? Transforming outdoor spaces into all-season retreats.

“People want to be able to relax outside and have the creature comforts of the inside, outside,” Udler shares.

From backyard fire pits to full outdoor kitchens equipped with TVs and weatherproof seating, outdoor living spaces are getting a serious upgrade. And it’s not just for warm-weather states like California or Florida anymore—contractors are designing features that can withstand snow and freezing temperatures.

For homeowners wondering if it’s worth it, Remodeling Magazine’s 2024 Cost vs. Value Report shows that a deck addition can have an ROI of 68% to 83%—a win-win for both enjoyment and resale.

The Smart (and Green) Upgrade

With the rise of electric vehicles (EVs), home electrification is another 2025 trend that’s gaining traction.

“The one new thing I've seen is with so many folks driving electric vehicles, it's all about electrification in the home,” says Udler.

Homes with EV charging stations are becoming more desirable. Realtor.com® research found that while only 0.9% of for-sale homes in 2023 were listed as EV-friendly, that number is growing fast—up from just 0.1% five years ago.

Beyond just charging cars, certain EVs, like Tesla models, can now power a home during an outage using features like "Powershare."

But here’s a pro tip: Don't DIY your EV charger installation.

“You need to hire a licensed electric contractor,” warns Udler. Proper installation ensures safety and efficiency, plus it helps maintain your home’s electrical integrity.

The Low-Cost Upgrade with Big Impact

First impressions matter. A fresh coat of paint, a well-maintained front yard, and a new front door can go a long way in boosting your home's value.

“A lot of people are looking at putting a fresh coat of paint on their homes,” Udler notes. While wallpaper had its moment, homeowners are now focusing on both interior and exterior painting to freshen up their space.

Small but effective curb appeal improvements include:
✔ Repainting the front door for a modern pop of color
✔ Power washing the driveway and siding
✔ Upgrading outdoor lighting for better ambiance and security
