Colorado's affordable housing crisis has reached a critical point, with about half of the population grappling with cost burdens related to housing expenses. As home prices and living costs continue to soar, the dream of homeownership becomes increasingly elusive for many. Recognizing this pressing issue, the University of Denver has stepped up to the plate with an innovative solution.
The university is launching a groundbreaking certificate program created to address the affordable housing needs in Colorado. This initiative comes at a crucial time when the state finds itself at the forefront of a nationwide housing crisis, coupled with a growing demand for skilled professionals.
Susan Daggett, who leads the Rocky Mountain Land Use Institute and co-directs the newly launched program, emphasizes the complex and layered aspects of the current housing crisis. She points out that in the past five years, living costs have skyrocketed, making it increasingly difficult for people to afford homeownership. Moreover, there's a significant shortage of housing options for both potential homeowners and renters.
The certificate program aims to train and educate professionals from diverse backgrounds, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to developing more affordable housing. This interdisciplinary approach will bring together experts from various fields, including architecture, real estate, construction management, law, social work, and public policy.
Professor Vivek Sah, co-director of the new program and director of DU's Burns School, emphasizes the importance of collective problem-solving. By providing education and knowledge to a wide range of professionals, the program hopes to foster a community-driven approach to tackling the housing crisis.
Set to launch this fall, the eight-month program at the University of Denver will offer scholarships to help cover costs, making it accessible to a broader range of participants. The curriculum imparts best practices and leadership skills, enabling graduates to build housing to serve needy communities.
This innovative program represents a significant step toward addressing Colorado's affordable housing crisis. By nurturing a new generation of skilled professionals, the University of Denver is paving the way for creative solutions and sustainable development in the housing sector.
